Taxodioxylon was named by Hartig (1848). It is extant. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Taxodioxylon goepperti.

It was reranked as Cupressinoxylon (Taxodioxylon) by Bharadwaj (1953).

It was assigned to Taxodieae by Knowlton (1919); to Cupressinoxylon by Bharadwaj (1953); to Plantae by Andrews (1970); to Taxodiaceae by Lakhanpal et al. (1976) and Liu et al. (1996); and to Cupressaceae by Egerton et al. (2016).
