Nipponarges was named by Kaneko (1984) [Sepkoski's age data: D m Sepkoski's reference number: ZR84]. It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Acanthopyge (Acanthopyge) by Thomas and Holloway (1988).

It was assigned to Lichida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Lichidae by Jell and Adrain (2002).
