Otarozoum was named by Thomas and Holloway (1988) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara Sepkoski's reference number: 774]. It is not extant. Its type is Lichas (Homolichas) melmerbiensis.

It was assigned to Homolichinae by Thomas and Holloway (1988); to Lichidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); to Lichida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Echinolichini by Pollitt et al. (2005).
