Rhinoceros megarhinus was named by de Christol (1835) [said by Owen 1846 to be 1835; also said to be 1834].
It was synonymized subjectively with Rhinoceros schleiermacheri by Owen (1846); it was recombined as Dicerorhinus megarhinus by Loose (1975); it was recombined as Dihoplus megarhinus by Symeonidis et al. (2006) and Lacombat (2008); it was misspelled as Dihophus megarhinus by Deng et al. (2011).
