Protodiplatys was named by Martynov (1925). Its type is Protodiplatys fortis. It is the type genus of Protodiplatyidae, Protodiplatyinae.
It was assigned to Protodiplatinae by Vishnyakova (1980); and to Protodiplatyidae by Martynov (1925), Vishnyakova (1986), Carpenter (1992) and Xing et al. (2016).
