Atopasaphus was named by Shergold (1971) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Fran-u Sepkoski's reference number: 16]. It is not extant. Its type is Atopasaphus petasatus.

It was assigned to Asaphida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Asaphidae by Shergold (1971) and Jell and Adrain (2002).
