Ammonites megalodiscus was named by Beyrich (1867).

It was recombined as Amaltheus megalodiscus by von Mojsisovics (1869); it was recombined as Ptychites megalodiscus by von Mojsisovics (1882), Arthaber (1896) and Arthaber (1915); it was recombined as Discoptychites megalodiscus by Kummel (1960), Skwarko (1973), Monnet and Bucher (2005), Vörös (2010), Vörös (2018) and Vörös et al. (2022).
