Sinotyrannus was named by Ji et al. (2009). Its type is Sinotyrannus kazuoensis.
It was assigned to Tyrannosauridae by Ji et al. (2009); to Tyrannosauroidea by Lü et al. (2014); and to Proceratosauridae by Carr et al. (2017).
