Ophthalmidium was named by Kübler and Zwingli (1870) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Anis-u J Kimm-l]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Opthalmidiinae by Cushman (1927); to Foraminiferida by Broglio Loriga et al. (1999) and Sepkoski (2002); and to Ophthalmidiidae by Loeblich and Tappan (1984), Loeblich and Tappan (1988) and Sepkoski (2002).
