Taxonomy
Aesopichthys erinaceus was named by Poplin and Lund (2000). Its type specimen is CM 48550, a skeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Bear Gulch (Carnegie Museum Collection), which is in an Arnsbergian open shallow subtidal limestone in the Heath Formation of Montana. It is the type species of Aesopichthys.
