Actinospongia hexagona was named by Mostler (1986). It is not extant. Its type locality is Großer Zlambachgraben, Leislingbach, which is in a Rhaetian offshore marl/limestone in the Zlambach Formation of Austria.
It was recombined as Actinospongiella hexagona by Finks et al. (2004).
