Taxonomy
Hyaenictis preforfex was named by Hendey (1974). Its type specimen is L 10055, a partial skeleton (skull and partial skeleton), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is 'E' Quarry, which is in a Pliocene cave sandstone in the Varswater Formation of South Africa.
