Discussion

The holotype (SAM-PK-591) is undiagnostic. In order to stabilise the species, Ezcurra & Butler (2015) proposed a neotype RC 846

Taxonomy
Proterosuchus fergusi was named by Broom (1903). Its type specimen is RC 846, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Ruygte Valley 321, Middelburg, which is in an Induan/Olenekian terrestrial horizon in the Katberg Formation of South Africa. It is the type species of Proterosuchus.
