Orbulina was named by d'Orbigny (1839) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l-u R]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Orbulininae by Cushman (1927); to Foraminiferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Globigerinidae by Snyder et al. (1983), Gibson (1983) and Lam and Leckie (2020).
