Taenicephalus was named by Ulrich and Resser (1924) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Dres-u Cm Fran-u Sepkoski's reference number: 472,494,618 in Walcott]. Its type is Conocephalites shumardi.

It was assigned to Asaphida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Parabolinoididae by Jell and Adrain (2002).
