Lestes was named by Leach (1815). It is extant. Its type is Lestes conexus. It is the type genus of Lestidae.

It was reranked as Agrion (Lestes) by Heer (1849).

It was assigned to Agrion by Heer (1849); to Lestidae by Carpenter (1992); and to Lestinae by Nel and Paicheler (1994).
