Megalaspides was named by Brögger (1886) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-u Sepkoski's reference number: 795]. Its type is Megalaspis dalecarlicus.

It was assigned to Isotelinae by Fortey (1975) and Hoel (1999); to Asaphida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Asaphidae by Jell and Adrain (2002).
