Taxonomy
Platyostoma niagarensis was named by Hall (1852). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Diaphorostoma niagarense by Clarke and Ruedemann (1903), Foerste (1923), Twenhofel (1928) and Northrop (1939); it was recombined as Naticonema niagarense by Bolton (1957); it was corrected as Platyostoma niagarense by Perry and Hattin (1960); it was recombined as Naticonema niagarensis by Brett (1999).
