Ponera globosa was named by Heer (1849). It is an impression. Its type locality is Oeningen (Zurich collection), which is in a Sarmatian crater lake limestone in the Upper Freshwater-Molasse Formation of Germany.
It was recombined as Poneropsis globosa by Taylor (1964) and Bolton (2012).
