Cataulacus was named by Smith (1853). It is extant. It is the type genus of Cataulacini.

It was assigned to Myrmicinae by Mayr (1867); to Cataulacini by Bolton (2003) and Bolton (2012); and to Crematogastrini by Ward et al. (2015).
