Locustopsis cockerelli was named by Handlirsch (1939). Its type specimen is USNM 3461, a tegmen, and it is an impression. Its type locality is Binton, Warwickshire (Brodie coll), which is in a Hettangian marine shale/limestone in the United Kingdom.
