Taxonomy
Gomphocerites bernstorffi was named by Geinitz (1880). Its type specimen is GPI EMAU 117/6, an elytra, and it is an impression. Its type locality is Dobbertin, Mecklenburg (Greifswald collection), which is in a Toarcian offshore claystone in Germany.

It was recombined as Locustopsis bernstorffi by Handlirsch (1906), Zeuner (1942), Zessin (1983), Zessin (1988) and Ansorge (1996); it was recombined as Plesioschwinzia bernstorffi by Gorochov and Coram (2023).
