Platyceras brownsportensis was named by Foerste (1903). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Diaphorostoma brownsportensis by Foerste (1909); it was recombined as Diaphorostoma brownsportense by Bassler (1915); it was recombined as Platyostoma brownsportense by Perry and Hattin (1960) and Wagner (2017).
