Spirifer multiplicatus was named by Sowerby (1829).

It was recombined as Trigonotreta multiplicata by King (1850); it was recombined as Spiriferina multiplicata by Howse (1857), Davidson (1858), Waagen (1883), Huang (1933) and Dunbar (1955); it was recombined as Spiriferellina multiplicata by Hou et al. (1979); it was recombined as Punctospirifer multiplicata by Lee and Gu (1980); it was recombined as Punctospirifer multiplicatus by Liao and Meng (1986) and Liao (1987); it was recombined as Paraspiriferina multiplicata by Shen et al. (1992), Zeng et al. (1995), Shen and Zhang (2008) and Shen and Clapham (2009).
