Spathognathodus commutatus was named by Branson and Mehl (1941).

It was recombined as Gnathodus commutatus by Thompson and Goebel (1969); it was recombined as Paragnathodus commutatus by Ji (1986); it was recombined as Lochriea commutata by Scott (1942) and Krumhardt et al. (1996).
