Chimaera egertoni was named by Buckland (1835).

It was recombined as Ischyodon egertoni by Agassiz (1843); it was recombined as Chimaera (Ischyodon) egertoni by Agassiz (1843); it was recombined as Ischyodus egertoni by Woodward (1891) and Kriwet and Klug (2011).
