Taxonomy
Pholidophorus porro was named by Bellotti (1857). It is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Perledo (MCSM collection), which is in a Longobardian marine limestone in the Perledo-Varenna Formation of Italy.

It was recombined as Prohalecites porroi by de Alessandri (1910), Tintori (1990), Bürgin (1995), Arratia and Tintori (1999) and López-Arbarello et al. (2014).
