Baleyopteryx was named by Sinitshenkova (1985). Its type is Baleyopteryx orthoclada. It is the type genus of Baleyopterygidae.

It was assigned to Baleyopterygidae by Sinitshenkova (1985), Sinichenkova (1985) and Sinitshenkova (1987).
