Mesithone was named by Panfilov (1980). It is not extant. It is the type genus of Mesithonidae.
It was assigned to Mesithonidae by Panfilov (1980) and Makarkin (1999); and to Mesithoninae by Khramov (2013) and Jepson (2015).
