Taxonomy
Darwinopterus robustodens was named by Lü et al. (2011). Its type specimen is 41HIII-0309A, a skeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Daxishan, Linglongta, which is in a Bathonian/Kimmeridgian lacustrine sandstone/mudstone in the Tiaojishan Formation of China.

Lü et al. 2011A new monofenestratid pterosaur differing from D. modularis in that tips of the teeth are much sharper, the teeth are conical and are swollen near the boundary between the crown and tooth root. There are nine pairs of teeth in the upper and eleven pairs in the lower jaws, which are smaller than those of D. modularis.
