Worthenia dunlopi was named by Thomas (1940). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Bankend, Lesmahagow, which is in a Pendleian carbonate limestone in the Upper Limestone Formation of the United Kingdom.
It was recombined as Wellergyi dunlopi by Wagner (2023).
