Sveltonectes insolitus was named by Fischer et al. (2011). Its type specimen is IRSNB R269, a skeleton (Near complete skeleton), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Ulyanovsk area [Sveltonectes insolitus type locality], which is in a Barremian marine marl in the Russian Federation.
