Squalus carcharias was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. Its type specimen is 1.

It was recombined as Carcharias (Scoliodon) carcharias by Eastman (1904); it was recombined as Carcharodon carcharias by Applegate and Espinosa-Arrubarrena (1996), Purdy et al. (2001), Adnet et al. (2009), Boessenecker (2011) and Kent (2018).
