It was considered an invalid subgroup of Actinopterygii by Patterson (1982).

It was assigned to Chondrostei by Schaeffer (1967) and Daly (1973); to Chondrostei by Uyeno (1978); to Osteichthyes by Sepkoski (2002); to Actinopterygii by Lombardo (2002); to Actinopterygii by Schaeffer and Dalquest (1978), Bürgin and Furrer (1992) and Heckert (2004); and to Chondrostei by Nelson (2006) and Long (2011).
