Aphelotoxon was named by Palmer (1965) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Dres-u Cm Fran-l Sepkoski's reference number: 486,489]. Its type is Bynumiella acuminata.

It was assigned to Ptychopariida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Phylacteridae by Jell and Adrain (2002).
