Sinosauropteryx prima was named by Ji and Ji (1996). Its type specimen is GMV/NGMC 2123/NIGP 127586, a skeleton, and it is a compression preserving soft parts.

It was recombined as Compsognathus prima by Ostrom et al. (1997).
