Eotheria was named by Kermack and Mussett (1958).

It was reranked as the subclass Eotheria by McKenna (1975); it was reranked as the infraclass Eotheria by Jenkins and Crompton (1979).

It was assigned to Mammalia by Bonaparte (1986); and to Prototheria by McKenna (1975), Jenkins and Crompton (1979) and Zhou et al. (1991).
