Blountia was named by Walcott (1916). Its type is Blountia mimula.

It was assigned to Ogygiocarinae by Walcott (1916); to Kingstoniidae by Westrop (1992) and Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Ptychopariida by Sepkoski (2002).
