Taxonomy
Goniatites artiensis was named by Grünewaldt (1860).

It was recombined as Medlicottia artiensis by Karpinsky (1889) and Tchernow (1907); it was recombined as Artinskia artiensis by Ruzhentsev (1956), Zakharov (1984) and Leonova (2002).
