Icthyocrinus was named by Conrad (1842) [Sepkoski's age data: S Wenl-l D Sieg]. It is the type genus of Icthyocrinidae, Icthyocrinacea.
It was corrected as Ichthyocrinus by Whitfield (1893).
It was assigned to Cyathocrinidae by Whitfield (1893); to Sagenocrinida by Sepkoski (2002); to Icthyocrinidae by Ubaghs et al. (1978) and Webster and Webster (2012); and to Flexibilia by Wright (2017).
