Amphitheria was named by Kermack et al. (1968). It was considered monophyletic by Lopatin and Averianov (2007).

It was assigned to Eupantotheria by Dashzeveg (1994); to Zatheria by Lopatin and Averianov (2007); and to Prototribosphenida by Averianov and Lopatin (2011).
