Crepicephalus was named by Owen (1852). Its type is Dikelocephalus iowensis.

It was reranked as Arionellus (Crepicephalus) by Meek and Hayden (1861).

It was assigned to Arionellus by Meek and Hayden (1861); to Crepicephalidae by Westrop (1992) and Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Ptychopariida by Sepkoski (2002).
