Cryptoclidus eurymerus
Taxonomy
Plesiosaurus eurymerus was named by Phillips (1871). Its type specimen is CAMSM specimen (Holotype; Sedgwick Museum, Cambridge) probably lost; BMNH R2860 (neotype almost complete skeleton), a partial skeleton (forelimb and vertebrae), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Bedford marine reptiles, which is in a Callovian marine horizon in the Oxford Clay Formation of the United Kingdom. It is the type species of Cryptoclidus.
It was recombined as Cimoliosaurus eurymerus by Lydekker (1889) and Lydekker (1889); it was recombined as Cimoliosaurus eumerus by Seeley (1892); it was synonymized subjectively with Cryptocleidus oxoniensis by Andrews (1895); it was recombined as Cryptocleidus eurymerus by Delair (1960); it was recombined as Cryptoclidus eurymerus by Brown (1981), O'Keefe (2001), Gasparini et al. (2002) and Araujo et al. (2008); it was misspelled as Cimoliosaurus eumerus by Carrano (2025).
