Palaeanatina was named by Hall (1870).

It was synonymized subjectively with Modiomorpha by Cox et al. (1969); it was corrected as Palanatina by Bouchet et al. (2010).

It was assigned to Bivalvia by Waagen (1881); and to Palanatinidae by Bouchet et al. (2010).
