Taxonomy
Penthetria dilatata was named by Handlirsch (1910). Its type specimen is GSC 7271, a wing, and it is an impression. Its type locality is Horsefly Mine, which is in a Ypresian lacustrine shale in Canada.

It was recombined as Plecia dilatata by Rice (1959).
