Taxonomy
Microphorus defunctus was named by Handlirsch (1910). It is an impression. Its type locality is Tulameen river, opposite Vermilion bluff, which is in a Ypresian lacustrine horizon in the Allenby Formation of Canada.

It was recombined as Microphor defunctus by Evenhuis (1994).
