Productus gruenewaldti was named by Krotov (1888) [Holotype lost, neotype selected by Lazarev (2011)
Productus semireticulatus var. gruenewaldti]. Its type specimen is PIN 3820/200, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Productus (Dictyoclostus) gruenewaldti by Reed (1944); it was recombined as Dictyoclostus gruenewaldti by Nakamura (1960) and Li and Gu (1980); it was recombined as Chaoiella gruenewaldti by Fantini Sestini (1965), Sarycheva (1977), Liao (1979), Li et al. (1986) and Lazarev (2011).
It was recombined as Productus (Dictyoclostus) gruenewaldti by Reed (1944); it was recombined as Dictyoclostus gruenewaldti by Nakamura (1960) and Li and Gu (1980); it was recombined as Chaoiella gruenewaldti by Fantini Sestini (1965), Sarycheva (1977), Liao (1979), Li et al.
