Natica shumardi was named by McChesney (1859). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Naticopsis shumardi by McChesney (1868), White (1891) and Knight (1933); it was recombined as Naticopsis (Naticopsis) shumardi by Yochelson and Saunders (1967).
