Taeniothaerus lakismatos was named by Briggs (1986). Its type specimen is UQF 40455 and is a mold. Its type locality is UQ L490, Fossil Ridge, Cracow Station, which is in an Artinskian coastal siliciclastic in the Buffel Formation of Australia.
