Taxonomy
Cuspicephalus scarfi was named by Martill and Etches (2013). Its type specimen is MJML K1918, a partial skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Kimmeridge Bay foreshore (Etches collection), which is in a Kimmeridgian deep-water mudstone in the Kimmeridge Clay Formation of the United Kingdom. It is the type species of Cuspicephalus.

plesiomorphies define this metaspecies: skull very slender, triangular in lateral view with a pointed rostrum, straight dental border, at least 12 or 13 rostral teeth anterior of nasoantorbital fenestra (naof), and probably 30 tooth pairs in total for the rostrum, low fibrous bony crest on the dorsal surface of the premaxilla and nasals extending posteriorly from the 12th alveolus of the rostrum to at least one third the length of the naof. Rostral index 5.4.
